Rite of Christian Initiation for Children

R.C.I.C. is designed for families of children who are preparing to receive the Sacraments after their 2nd grade year.

Welcome! What a privilege and a joy it is to be invited to journey with you as God is calling your family closer to Him and His Church! It is our hope and our prayer that this time will be one of profound renewal and spiritual growth for every member of your family and for our parish family.

The process that you are undertaking is one that requires serious commitment. As with all sacramental preparation, we follow Archdiocesan guidelines which call for adequate preparation (see "related file" below). This means that, ordinarily, your children will prepare for reception of the Sacraments in a process that lasts two years. This requirement of 2 years “proximate” and “immediate” preparation is not unique to RCIC, but is expected of all families with children who are coming forward to receive the sacraments. However, because your children are older and more able to participate in their preparation, and also in acknowledgment that your family may have been away from the Church for a time, there are a few more steps in the RCIC process.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us that it is, first and foremost, the responsibility of the parents to train their children in the faith. We will call on you to fulfill this responsibility in new ways as you do your part to prepare your children. At the same time, the parish is the Eucharistic community and a privileged place for the catechesis of children and their parents.

This means that we will support you in your role and work hard to foster a faith journey that honors the relationship you and your children already have with God; to facilitate a process that helps you move more deeply into the mystery of God and His Church through instruction, prayer, the rites of the Church and the support of the faith community. Reception of the Sacraments will be, not an end or a graduation, but the gateway to a lifelong commitment to spiritual growth and the love of God and neighbor.

Again, thank you for blessing us with the invitation to accompany you and support you on this most wonderful journey!
